Retrospect: Live painting @Shing02+Emi Meyer+Zaion Live SF

In retrospect:

I couldn’t sleep the night before of this show because of the excitement. Knowing that Zaion is going away for his journey, I was so emotionally involved in this show – I was so glad that I was able to make this show happen. Shing02, a genius MC (I’d like to call him a poet rather than MC…) who I respect since high school; Emi Meyer, a beautiful young Jazz singer who I believe that she was born with her talent, and world wonderer / beat maker Zaion, whose dynamic sound always is in tune with my internal rhythm… my favorite artists from the Bay Area reunited once again here in SF.

I wrote Shing02’s song lyrics in Japanese calligraphy

The lyrics I chose were from “栞 (bookmarks)” / “Black is Beautiful” / “Luv (sic)”

Layers of poetry.

To me, music and calligraphy art are inseparable. Music inspires me, stirs up my creativity and and motivates me to write poems. Words fall into my mind so naturally from above the clouds…

Emi forgot to bring a power cord for her keyboard from LA… so she played Zaion’s Nord. Shining in bright red, it even looked cute and nice with her on the stage.

It was 2 days before my birthday – there’s nothing more beautiful birthday gift than this show. Really good turn out for Tuesday, and seeing lots of friends’ smiles on this night blew all the worries (from last-minute booking, promotion and planning…) away. I’m so grateful to be able to work with artists + friends who I love and respect, and I know deep in my heart that this passion for music and art keeps me alive. Thank you all who came out to the show, bringing us the great vibes!

Friday June 11, 2010 Aoi x Noa- Live painting

The spotlight of the night was Quadron from Denmark – debut live at Mozaic Lounge in SJ. Noa- and I started to paint around 8:30pm in the outdoor lounge area of Mozaic.

DONE.

Inside of the Mozaic Lounge, Coco of Quadron was singing live with bassist and percussionist. I totally missed their performance since we were painting outside, but I was able to hear her voice, stealing audiences’ heart.

今週金曜日、デンマークからQuadronがBay Areaにやってきます。

そのQuadronライブで、Aoi x Noa-としてライブペイントで参加します！
会場のMosaic LoungeはSan Joseダウンタウンに位置するHotel Sheratonのレストラン／バー。いい雰囲気で、外にはオープンなPatioもあってリラックスできる空間です。

今月は本当に盛りだくさんでかなり忙しいけれど、これだけ色々なopportunityがあるというのは嬉しい事です。San Joseまでは車で一時間ほどなので、San Francisco近郊の人は足をのばしてみるのもいいかも！？

QUADRON (http://myspace.com/quadronquadron) hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark was born when Robin encountered Coco at the suggestion of a friend. Already a name within Owusu & Hannibal and Boom Clap Bachelors, Robin was ready to continue his collaborations with some new adventures. In the ingénue of Coco he saw a female muse, influenced by Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, and the group was born.

After the duo, who are also members of the soul collective Boom Clap Bachelors, enjoyed the accolades of the collectives debut Kort Før Dine Læber (2008); Robin and Coco began work on their own debut recording for Quadron. This lead to the release of their debut, “Quadron”, in Denmark (August 2009). The record found its way into the hands of Anthony Valdez, a DJ at the influential radio station KCRW in LA. He immediately began playing the record and the rest of the DJs followed. Since the end of 2009, Quadron has been a constant fixture in KCRW’s Top 10 and hundreds of top music blogs, and this led to the duo signing to the Los Angeles label, Plug Research, whose roster includes Bilal, Dntel, Flying Lotus, Daedelus and more.

Robin has already enjoyed a long list of collaborations with the likes of Aloe Blacc, Om mas Keith of Sa-Ra, Buraka Som Sistema, Wally Badarou (Talking Heads, Level 42), Erick Sermon, and others as well as being able to site such notable fans as Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D.) and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem). Now, along with Coco, Quadron becomes his next spectacular story!

Shing02
Rap activist, peace advocate, inventor. Born in Tokyo 1975, raised in Tanzania, England, and Japan, Shing02 landed in SF Bay Area in ’89 after the quake at the age of 15. After a move to Berkeley for schooling in ’93 he became immersed in the local hiphop scene that launched dozens of acts worldwide. In ’96 Shing02’s music made its way back to Japan, then partnered with Mr. Higo of Mary Joy Recordings, garnering tremendous support in his homeland. He has collaborated with music stars such as Ghostface Killah, M.I.A., TOKiMONSTA, Nujabes, Ryuichi Sakamoto to name a few, and have achieved recognition beyond the scene for producing theme song of hip-hop influenced film ‘Samurai Champloo’.

Emi Meyer
Born in Kyoto, Japan, Emi Meyer grew up in Seattle, Washington. Having studied jazz and classical piano since the age of six, Emi began her musical career at the keyboard.She self-produced her first album,Curious Creature, in 2007. Never afraid to experiment and take matters in her own hands, she is paving a path between Los Angeles and Tokyo and just finished a degree in Ethnomusicology. Her new Japanese albumPassportwas recorded with musicians in the US, Japan and Brazil. The next English album is set for release later this year.

Zaion
Born in Toyama, Japan, Zaion lives in San Francisco. He was raised with a classical music background, then he gravitated towards creating hip hop. Zaion is an avid traveler, he aims to mesh cultural textures with lush musical landscapes with his main tool: the MPC2000XL. His long-awaited debut album “Nomadic Journals” was released in December 2009.

Awakened by the scents of Springtime released into gentle breezes, animal life rises from hibernation beneath fertile soil into the fresh WIND: the voice of nature.
Through art and media, Surreality in Reality (S.I.R.) has been exploring the elements, WATER, FIRE, EARTH, and now WIND, to bridge cultures with an awareness of nature inspired by the ancient Japanese philosophy of harmony between the four elements. In this final exhibition completing the cycle of our series, the S.I.R. Japanese Art Collective is preparing a space for the invisible force of WIND, it’s power finding expression with a live performance, an exhibition, and in carrying the music.

久しぶりのブログになってしまいましたが、ついにSIRのFour Elementsシリーズも完結を迎えようとしています。今回は「風」です。先週はジャパンタウンで大々的に桜祭りが開催され、ここ最近は春を感じる風が肌に気持ちのいい日々です。進化を遂げているSpace GalleryでSIRがショーを始めてからもう２年になります。早いもんだなぁー。今回でSIR参加が最後になるメンバーも沢山います。私にとっては、かなり思い入れのあるショーになります。

あ、そういえば、忙しくてなかなかイベントなどに顔を出せてない中、Thom YorkeのソロプロジェクトのAtoms for Peaceのライブに行ってきました。Atoms for Peace のベースはあのRed Hot Chili PeppersのFlea！！これがほんとに最高すぎて、私の心の中は大変な事になりました。Radioheadとレッチリは、私が高校時代からかなり入れこんできたバンド。ずっとDub StepやElectronicaのDJ系のイベントやJazzのコンサートに行っていたので、やっぱりロックの生バンドはいいなと改めて思わせられたショーでした。

改装されたばかりのFox Theater! 息をのむライティング。

前座はFlying Lotus。この間MezzanineにもFlying Lotusを見に行ったけれど、彼のライブは相変わらずベースぶんぶんの爆音で、彼のライブをより楽しむにはどんなEQが必要なのか考えてしまいました。そしてさらに、回りのお客さんは前座だと思って、ぺちゃくちゃおしゃべり。自分が目玉ではないライブでプレイするときに、自分の音も名前も聞いた事無いというお客さんの心をいかに掴むか。いい音創って、ショーのクオリティがやばいなら、お客さんも自然に反応するはず。「お、誰だこれ？！」と。Flying Lotusがセットを終えてバックに戻るとき、ステージに近い席のお客さんたちはかなりの声援をあげていました。やはり、日々自分の世界を極めていく事なのだな。

今週はBonoboがまたやってきます。
WINDの為の書道の作品を頑張って終わらせて、Bonobo行けるようにがんばろう。

波瀾万丈な予感のする2010年の幕開けから、やっとブログをアップする時間を得て（つまりは風邪をひいたということなんですが）、告知に至りますSIRのアートショー。
Surreality in Realityの2010年、第一弾目は、自然の四要素３つ目の「土」”EARTH”。
新たなメンバーを迎えて、大地に根を張る大木のごとく成長しつつあるSIRですが、今年は５月で２周年を迎えるということもあり、パワーアップしていきたいと思っています。

テクスチャーの加わった渋いフライヤーデザインを手がけてくれたのはMieさん aka Sleepytiger & Junkoさん。今回はまた奮発してバニッシュのフィニッシュを加えて、お洒落な仕上がりです。
今Business Cardも製作中、果たしてイベント開催当日に間に合うかはどきどきなところですが。

会場で「土」という空間を感じてもらうべく、試行錯誤しながらミーティングを重ねて、着々と準備中です。
今回は展示期間が水曜日から土曜日まであり、土曜日の夜７時前までに来てくれた人には、７時からのイベントに無料で入れるという特典もあります。というわけで、会場ヘはお早めに。

Finally I was able to update my blog – it means that I caught a cold and can’t get out of the bed. My pillow and Kleenex are my best friends right now. Hopefully I’ll be able to go out and breathe some fresh air tomorrow.

So, here in San Francisco, Surreality In Reality crew’s first art show of this year is coming up on January 30th, 2010, entitled as “Four Elements vol.3 EARTH”. Four new members came on board, and we are ready to sail out and explore the rest of this long journey. I’d like to take SIR to the next level this year, since our 2nd year anniversary is coming up in May. I am glad to see how we as an art collective are growing like a big tree spreading its roots underground.

Surreality in Reality Crew is cultivating the wilderness in pursuit of the third element among Four Elements of nature: Water, Fire, Earth and Wind. The fruits of the fire and water have formed, ripened and returned to soil, as known as Earth, providing ideal nutrient base and minerals. Fallen leaves and fruits of autumn fertilize the earth, generating lives on this planet. This series of art exhibitions and live performances will be presented by Japanese local talents, known as S.I.R., showcasing their artistic interpretation of “EARTH” in various media.

WONDER-FULL SF.

I love listening to Stevie’s voice that beautifully flows with the clear sound of piano, especially in the car when I drive to cross the Bay Bridge. If the sky is blue, with this melody the sky looks more blue..

I was waiting for this day: Stevie Wonder Tribute: WONDER-FULL SF @ Mezzanine, December 14, 2009.

It has been raining in San Francisco these days. Although it was raining so hard this Saturday, Mezzanine was packed – people gather to where good music is, no matter how sadly the sky cries.

I had wonderful weekend thanks to DJ Spinna & Bobbito. They were having another party at SOM the next day, so I stopped by after the work at gallery & party at Kevin Taylor‘s studio (←this was wonderfull too!). I was dancing dancing dancing for two nights in a row. They’ve got vibes, grooves!! Ah.

Music makes me cry.

“Stevie didn’t have to see to believe. All you have to do is listen to believe.”

Yes.

It reminded me of what Bill Withers said in his documentary film, which I saw recently at the film screenings at Poleng Lounge. Bill was making a song with an blind musician, and he said to him:

“You are disabled in one thing, but you are enabled in so many other things.”

It is so true. Half full, or half empty.

ここ一週間、一気に忙しくなりました。

先週から、Gallery Heistでインターンしてます。月曜定休ですが、毎日夜遅くまで空いてるので、仕事の帰りがてらでも遊びに来てくださーい。Mike Giant, Adam Caldwell, Brett Amory, Kevin Taylorをはじめ、見応えのあるアーティストの作品が壁を飾ってます。

I started to work for Gallery Heist last week as an intern. The gallery is open from Tues – Sat: 12-10pm, Sun: 12-6pm. I’ll be there pretty often, so please come by! Check out the website for more details.

先週末、S.I.R.の次回のアートショーのミーティングをしました。今回も参加アーティストかなり多いです。テーマはEARTH「土」。新たな参加メンバーも顔合わせをして、改めてSIRの今後の方向性を話し合いました。フライヤーも今月中には仕上がってくる予定です。Webの更新もぼちぼち進んでます。

そのあと、Double Punchでのアートオープニングをのぞきにゆきました。Heistで展示しているアーティストの中の５人がここでも作品を展示しているということで…

S.I.R. crew is getting ready for the next art show, “EARTH”. We had a meeting last Saturday at Space Gallery and redefined our direction. 18 artists will be exhibiting their art works.. I can’t wait how this turn out.

After the meeting, Akko, Natsumi from San Jose, Andrew and I went to Double Punch in North Beach to check out their art opening, entitled as “We haven’t felt this way in years“. This show and Now Or Never at Gallery Heist share 5 same artists.

一階はトイのフロアになっていて、数えきれないほど多種多様な日本のおもちゃも店内を埋め尽くしていました。ゲームやる人たちにはかなり心躍るフィギュアとかあるんだろうなと思うけれど、、あたしの心を躍らせたのは、ガチャピンのおもちゃでした（笑）あんなの、日本でも見たことないような。。。日本のアニメ＆ストリート文化の浸透ぶりを目の当たりにした碧生でした。

このあとは、Jazzanova@SOM！

We stopped by Birite Icecream in Mission (such an awesome icecream place in the city!), and then we head over to SOM for Jazzanova. Well, not the whole members of the band came over from Germany, but it shook my head & body for sure.

I danced like a crazy person, totally soaked in my own sweat, and that’s how I caught a cold the next day… I had a fever yesterday, but I feel much better today. Gotta get some rest for tomorrow – Thanksgiving Day a.k.a. Turkey Day!

たあいもない日々

就職活動は忍耐あるのみ。
OPTの仕事先を探すのに、日々四苦八苦してる。
Californiaは（特にサンフランシスコ）仕事がないというけれど、
今それを大いに痛感してる。
こんなとき音楽や、手軽なエンターテインメントで自分を励ますのだけど、
自分を律していかなければ。
「決意」ってやつを貫くのも忍耐だなと思う。
とにかく希望を持ってやることやってれば、きっとこの日々にも光が射してくると信じて。。

昨日、DJ Spinnaに期待してYoshi’s でのイベントLe Cirqueに顔を出してきたけど
音が驚くほどメインストリームだったのであまりノリきらず
とりあえずウイスキーをあおって、ただの飲んだくれになってしまった。
最近体調がよろしくないので、酒を飲むと結構あっというまに酔いが回る。
やれやれ、、自分を律していかなければ。

今夜は103 HarrietにDaedelus, James Pants, Free the Robotsが来るので、また音の洪水を浴びてこようと思イマス。Free the Robotsを見るのは今年２回目。Daedelusがどんなキラーサウンドで戦いを挑んでくるか。

昨日初めて行ったAquarius Records。Missionにある比較的小さなレコード屋なんだけど、Experimentalとか、Rock&Popにしても輸入物が多くて、面白かった。紙ジャケが多い！これは紙ジャケ好きにはたまらない。ジャケ買いできるくらいお洒落なのがたくさんあった。JazzやHip Hopはめっぽう少ない。日本のアーティストもあった。結構サイケ。ここはもっとゆっくり行って掘りたい所。
この写真撮ったときに、目の前のカップルがすごくいい雰囲気出してた。
ちょっとヨーロッパの映画に出てきそうなワンシーン。
