As a founder of Surreality In Reality aka S.I.R. collective, as a Japanese calligrapher, as an artist, and as a girl born and raised in Japan, I would like to thank you all the amazing artists, galleries, vendors, local businesses and friends for your generous support to make “RISE JAPAN: Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fundraiser” come into a shape.

One email. Everything starts from one email.

S.I.R. teamed up with Gallery Heist (Julianne Yates, the owner) and Kokoro Studio (Keiko Kuramoto, the owner), and we are putting our effort to raise fund through the creative energy and the power of art to help our home country, Japan. We are working on a series of fundraising art exhibitions & performances in San Francisco, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Give2Asia: Artists Help Japan – Earthquake&Tsunami 2011
http://give2asia.org/artistshelp

Our eyes hurt because we can’t take our eyes off of the news stream, and are blurred from the endless tears. Our minds are filled with fear, confusion, anxiety and sympathy. We encourage communities to be united with love, and attempt to transform our sleepless nights into tangible support for people in Japan.  Please, please join us to help Japan, if we do this together, we can make a big change.

I launched the website for RISE JAPAN last night, we will be adding updates everyday. Visit www.risejapan.us for more details, and contact us at info@risejapan.us for any suggestions, questions regarding donation and support.

– Love, Aoi Yamaguchi

Japanese Calligrapher, Founder of Surreality in Reality.

I have been watching CNN Live streaming to catch up with the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plants’ meltdown in Japan.  Not only to pray for the situation to get better, I am here alive, I do what I can do to contribute.

[Upcoming: Group Show] “Warhol Reimegined: The New Factory”

Warhol Reimagined: The New Factory.

As one of the 32 Campbell’s Soup Can artists, I reworked on Onion Soup taking the approach to combine traditional Japanese aesthetic and style into the Warhol’s refined imagery, using diluted sumi ink and Japanese gasen paper for calligraphy.

We all had a month to work on the piece.  Due to the trip to DC and NY, I finished my piece while I was staying in Brooklyn, and shipped it to San Francisco.  I was relieved to hear that my piece made it to Project One Gallery. Phew.

After examining Warhol’s Onion Soup can for such a long time, I felt funny when I stumbled upon Warhol’s book at NYMOMA bookstore.

And of course, at NYMOMA, the actual Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans!

(My iPhone did its best to get this grainy picture… Please forgive.)

NYMOMA had a featured exhibition of Warhol’s motion picture series on the top floor.  It was very inspiring… I loved how they designed to have large projections on all the walls in the gallery space, so that you are 360° surrounded by black & white motion picture portraits of well-known faces.  Especially, I loved the motion picture piece titled “kiss” in the secluded room all the way back in the gallery space: the walls on both sides crops the horizontal projection image into a tall skinny rectangle image, so you can only peek the lovers kissing if you stand far from the entrance of this room.  I had more than enough Andy Warhol in my February 2011, although I didn’t intend to.

Life is full of surprises and lots of unexpected coincidences. When you think of someone or something strongly, you’re somehow destined to come across with them.  This New York trip convinced me to believe this our life’s ironic yet enjoyable philosophy.

Come join us to tonight to witness San Francisco’s renowned and emerging artists’ unique interpretations paying homage to our timeless hero, Andy Warhol. It will be one of the historic events!

Group show featuring East Bay artist “The Bridge is Over”, presented by Spoke Art, just opened last Saturday at Lopo Gallery, San Francisco.  I had one piece exhibited in this show.

“Who You Are Defines What You Do”

I made this piece early this year, and kept in my studio since, but have never shown it at any galleries. Decided to show this time…

Larger view: My piece was placed next to Eddie Colla‘s work…

Lopo Gallery has three rooms connected, and you enter from the entrance of Space Gallery on Polk Street.

Go visit Spoke Art blog for a slideshow of photos from the night of the opening reception, taken by Shaun Roberts.

I’m going to be in a group show “THE BRIDGE IS OVER” this Saturday November 27, 2010, at Lopo Gallery SF.  I will exhibit one of my new calligraphy works (new series), which was supposed to be my personal collection.

“Spoke Art is proud to present our next group offering: “The Bridge is Over”. A reference to the classic Boogie Down Productions track made in the turmoils of the Bronx/Queens hip-hop beef, The Bridge is Over has been re-contextualized to signify the disparate gap that exists between the culture and topography of the greater Bay Area. Spoke Art has enlisted our favorite artists who live and work in the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, etc.) and brought them together to show San Francisco the quality of work, and strength of the scene, that exists just over the Bay Bridge.”

Come and join us to view a selection of amazing photography, sculpture, street art and painting all being created in the Greater East Bay, the show opens Saturday, November 27th.
Due to the gallery’s liquor license, the opening night party is 21+ (free to the public)
An all ages preview will be made available before the bar opens from 6-8PM, complimentary food and beverage will be served.

Artists include:
Attaboy, Brett Amory, John Felix Arnold III, Kate August, Nicholas Lea Bruno, John Casey, Monica Canilao, Eddie Colla, Dave Correia, Meagan Donegan, Emory Douglas, GATS, Carolynn Haydu, Hunter de la Ghetto, Peter Gronquist, Scott Hove, Jeremiah Jenkins, Keba Konte, Justin Lovato, Amanda Lopez, Becca Jay, Daryll Peirce, Deth P Sun, Ras Terms, Gina Tuzzi, Annie Vought, Derek Weisberg, Aoi Yamaguchi, Zoltron

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 27th 2010
show runs until Saturday, December 18th

The preview of my upcoming exhibition & live performance, “還源 KANGEN -Reunited with Nature-” was featured on SF Weekly’s event section.

Dancer Mika just arrived SF today, and this time, we are now reunited here in San Francisco since our first show in NYC. We had a international online meeting at a cafe at noon in SF, 10pm in Stockholm.

We are finalizing the plan for the show.  Please join us on the night of opening reception at Fivepoints Arthouse, located at 72 Tehama st (2nd + Tehama in SOMA) this Friday November 19th 7 – 2am.  We will start the performance when the venue is packed.  Darker colored clothing strongly recommended!

Custom Calligraphy for KENZO Fragrance Event @Bloomingdale’s San Francisco

I worked for Kenzo’s fragrance fair at Bloomingdale’s San Francisco, by making customized Japanese calligraphy gifts for  Kenzo’s customers on Sunday, November 14th.  It was a day after I came back to the United States with an artist visa in my hand (finally… thank you so much everyone – I will make another post about this later).  Customers who made purchase of $92 get to have my customized calligraphy on small Shikishi paper and frame upon their request.

From the morning of this mellow Sunday till the evening, I had fun having conversations with customers who had various kinds of requests – a “I am sorry” gift for a girlfriend, names of their sons and daughters, nephews and nieces… both in English and Japanese.  Every one of them was really sweet requests and made my heart warm.

Thank you everyone who shared a good time with me at this event… I hope this little gift made your girlfriend, your niece, son, and daughter happy :)
