Retrospect: RAW Exhibit – “When Birds Disappeared from the Sky”

My new calligraphy works, “When Birds Disappeard from the Sky”, were exhibited at RAW Gallery Exhibit in Oakland on August 6, 2010.  Paying homage to my favorite poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, who is one of the most widely read and highly regarded of living Japanese poets internationally, I chose this beautiful poem for my new series of calligraphy pieces in hopes to bring the viewers an awareness about the relationships between humans and nature, and how the world is changing through the current stream of rapid civilization, industrialization, and modernization.

Each piece has one paragraph, and these five complete the whole poem. I used Tan-boku (淡墨: diluted sumi-ink) to soften the strokes, aiming to give the letters the feeling of lightness like feathers, and openness like a blue sky.

(Read from top right to left, vertically)

1  When Beasts Disappear from the Forest

2  When Fish Disappear from the Sea

3  When Children Disappear from Town

4  When Humanity Lost Oneself

5  When Birds Disappear from the Sky

When Birds disappeared from the Sky

On the day the Beasts disappeared from the Forest

The Forest held its breath

On the day the Beasts disappeared from the Forest

Humans continued building roads

On the day Fish disappeared from the Sea

The Sea hollowly groaned

On the day Fish disappeared from the Sea

Humans continued building ports

On the day Children disappeared from Town

The Town bustled with even more activity

On the day Children disappeared from Town

Humans continued building parks

On the day Humanity lost Oneself

All Humans were alike one another

On the day Humans lost Personality

Humans continued to believe in the future

On the day Birds disappeared from the Sky

The Sky quietly cried

On a day Birds disappeared from the Sky

Humans continued singing, Unaware

Poem by Shuntaro Tanikawa (1974), Shuei-Sha Publishing (1974)

What’s ironic is that Shuntaro Tanikawa wrote this poem in 1974 – 34 years ago -…  we all know enough about the ignorance of humans, and we all know what is going to happen if we continue what we’re doing.  As we seek better life, the more convenient our life become, the less sensitive our sense of reality become… we all know, but we can’t help it because it creates new standard of culture, lifestyle, and the society – Something “new” becomes something “normal”. Then we move on to look for something “new” again, and then it naturally leads to further development, innovation, construction, destruction, reconstruction… infinite loop.  At least, I want to be close to the nature, which is the origin of our lives and the world we live in, by appreciating its beauty and importance through my own medium Japanese calligraphy.

Installation done!

Around 8:30pm.

w/ the curator Carly Ivan Garcia. Thank you Carly for your hard work!

Four Elements vol. 4 風 -WIND- / Saturday May 1st, 2010 / Final series of four exhibitions.

I had four Japanese calligraphy for exhibition:

We can’t see the form of wind, but we can see the force of wind in our environment – the swinging tree branches, trembling leaves, subtle scent of fragrance, sea waves, or movement of your girlfriend’s hair – in numerous ways.  My theme was to embody this invisible force of wind in three different ways in terms of its strength and seasonal characters through different styles of brush stroke techniques in Japanese calligraphy.

Balmy Zephyr
19×19″

Blizzard
19×19″

春風 Spring Breeze
27×40″

(on the left)

Whirlwind
19×19″

Live painting with Noa-. I started to write “wind” in powder blue.

Removed masking tapes of cherry blossom flower petal. Adding gold shadows.

Thinking where to write my signature next to Noa-‘s…

Thank you for watching, everyone!! ;-)

Awakened by the scents of Springtime released into gentle breezes, animal life rises from hibernation beneath fertile soil into the fresh WIND: the voice of nature.
Through art and media, Surreality in Reality (S.I.R.) has been exploring the elements, WATER, FIRE, EARTH, and now WIND, to bridge cultures with an awareness of nature inspired by the ancient Japanese philosophy of harmony between the four elements. In this final exhibition completing the cycle of our series, the S.I.R. Japanese Art Collective is preparing a space for the invisible force of WIND, it’s power finding expression with a live performance, an exhibition, and in carrying the music.

Atoms for Peace のベースはあのRed Hot Chili PeppersのFlea!!

INVASION by Punk Drunkers & Aoi Yamaguchi Japanese Calligraphy Performance from Aoi Yamaguchi.

PUNK DRUNKERS

Oh so long for this night I prayed
That a star would guide you my way
To share with me this special day
Where a ribbon’s in the sky for our love…

I love listening to Stevie’s voice that beautifully flows with the clear sound of piano, especially in the car when I drive to cross the Bay Bridge. If the sky is blue, with this melody the sky looks more blue..

I was waiting for this day: Stevie Wonder Tribute: WONDER-FULL SF @ Mezzanine, December 14, 2009.

It has been raining in San Francisco these days.  Although it was raining so hard this Saturday, Mezzanine was packed – people gather to where good music is, no matter how sadly the sky cries.

I had wonderful weekend thanks to DJ Spinna & Bobbito.  They were having another party at SOM the next day, so I stopped by after the work at gallery & party at Kevin Taylor‘s studio (←this was wonderfull too!).   I was dancing dancing dancing for two nights in a row.  They’ve got vibes, grooves!! Ah.

Music makes me cry.

“Stevie didn’t have to see to believe. All you have to do is listen to believe.”

Yes.

It reminded me of what Bill Withers said in his documentary film, which I saw recently at the film screenings at Poleng Lounge.  Bill was making a song with an blind musician, and he said to him:

“You are disabled in one thing, but you are enabled in so many other things.”

It is so true.  Half full, or half empty.

Right now my brain is occupied by this song: “Young Folks” by Peter, Bjorn and John.  How can I get away from this??

Art Basel Miami Beach 09 [Day2] – Aqua Art / Fountain

Our 2nd day in Miami started a little late than we scheduled.  My body was crying and screaming because of the busy schedule from the first day, but the mild weather of Miami beach was soothing and refreshing.  No need for jackets or scarfs, just throw a tank-top and dress on you, and you’ll be fine.  Awesome, Miami…

First we decided to visit Aqua Wynwood, where two of my travel mates had their art works exhibited.

AQUA ART (http://www.aquaartmiami.com/)

Aqua Art is one of the big art fairs at Art Basel.  Participants are 50 galleries from cities like New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Osaka, ans so on.  Each gallery gets their own booth to exhibit art works and promote up-and-coming artists.

I headed to Thinkspace, where Brett had his pieces exhibited.  Thinkspace is a contemporary art gallery from Los Angeles.

I love these two pieces.  I love they way he uses colors..

Brin also had his works exhibited at Aqua. Brin makes bronze sculpture and designs toys and figures for artists such as Mars-1 and Ron English.

I was also able to meet and talk with Ted Lincoln, who uses sumi-ink in his art works.  Since he uses similar ink and method in his creative process, I was interested in his works for a while – I saw his pieces at 111Minna a while ago, and they were so beautiful.  He used to live in San Francisco, but now he moved back to his hometown in Florida and owns a larger studio.

As I kept exploring, I found Gallery Edel from Osaka, which was the only one gallery from Japan at Aqua.  They had Yayoi Kusama’s piece at the front, obviously caught my attention immediately.  The gallerists got their unique “osaka” style humor in the conversation and I enjoyed contemporary Japanese art.

After spending three hours at Aqua Wynwood, we rented a car near the Miami Airport, and stopped by California Pizza Kitchen for the dinner.  Oh no we didn’t plan to go there, we just randomly stumbled upon CPK… I, of course, felt so funny about us having a dinner at CPK although we are in Miami.  I remember that all the menus were a little expensive than CPK in California.  We didn’t care anything at this point, since this trip has been troublesome for all of us…

Back to South Beach, Beach Paradise Hotel.

aoi_talking

This is the last photo of me with my Sony Erricsson phone.  At this point, I didn’t know that my phone will be stolen at the beach after this fun conversation with my friend who missed Art Basel…

Hanging out at the beach all night, everything started to seem like a fairy tale in a well-made dream.  Art Basel in a summer-like breeze took me out to a paradise, far, far away from cold rain in San Francisco.  With this view, you’ll be speechless; nothing can be more eloquent to describe this moment than just feeling it.

Floating house on the sea water.  This was part of installation for Art Basel, which I was not aware of.. With the marmalade sunrise as a background, it’s so beautiful that does not even look like it’s real… it is almost like a painting.

Picture 8

Miami!
Miami is waiting for me!!!
