Smart Design San Francisco Office

Senior communication designer, Noriko, kindly invited me to Smart Design for the February’s guest speaker presentation. She came to my “KANGEN -Reunited with Nature-” show last November, and thought of sharing my unique calligraphy performance with her coworkers and other designers within the company.  Thank u!

Through the presentation, I explained what I’m trying to convey through my works, how to de-construct and re-construct the form of letters such as Kanji and Hiragana, how to determine the composition and the balance of letters, and also the meanings of the poems in my works.

Hello!

The monitor is connected to the Barcelona office. Hello!

In a comfortable atmosphere, I had fun having a presentation of slides and videos, although I was just recovering from sickness. Especially the last 20 minutes of Q&A was very interesting – there were really good insights and questions, such as “is the traditional aspect of calligraphy skill still significant when you are making contemporary work?”, “what is the difference between Japanese calligraphy and graffiti?”, “for the calligraphy performance, is it more about the art of making than the actual finalized work?”, “what do you specifically do to set your mind in the production mode?” etc etc. It is important for me to know the perception and understanding of Japanese calligraphy from non-Japanese speakers’ point of view. Especially for those who are not familiar with oriental traditional culture and who don’t understand Japanese language, the level of understanding the meaning must vary.  Since Japanese calligraphy is the art form that uses letters as its material, as a presenter, I have to design the exhibitions and performances accessible and understandable for everyone considering the language barrier.  And as an educator, it is crucial to listen to the audience’s voice and know what needs to be explained.  – It was very meaningful experience.  Thank you very much Smart Design!

Next month, I will be having a guest speaker presentation at a different design firm. Details are TBA. Stay tuned :)

[LECTURE] Japanese Calligraphy Class at Burnett Children’s Development Center

On January 24th, I taught 3~4 years old kids at Burnett Children’s Development Center in Hunter’s Point / Bayview in San Francisco.  I was invited as a guest art instructor by a non-profit organization called ArtSeed, which has been contributing to this school to improve their art education programs over 7 years.  In the United States, January 17th was Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day – so we have decided to design this workshop in respect of his teaching of “LOVE”.  Two classes, one hour each.

“We’re gonna write LOVE today!” – I explained what the calligraphy is in really simple words, as I was writing them out on the white board. And I asked, “Do you know what LOVE is?” Then a boy answered, “I LOVE my mommy.”  Awwww, so sweet.

Teachers were even more curious to try.

It’s my job to catch these energetic kids’ attention, too.

Who’s ready to do this~?         Me~~!!!

I was really impressed at how kids are so good at mimicking!

Your mommy is so proud of you!

With everyone from one class!

Well done!

I will participate in Sketch Tuesdays at 111 Minna next Tuesday, January 25th.

Sketch Tuesdays is “live sketching/art making by local artists. Artwork is available for sale to the audience. Artists to be announced on Sketchtuesdays.comFecalface.com” (www.111minnagallery.com)

I will be making small calligraphy pieces with other artists, and you can purchase them on the spot for unbelievably inexpensive price. This will be fun!

Please come by with your sketch books, meet artists and get inspired!

My Japanese calligraphy works, the series of “When Birds Disappeared from the Sky,” is exhibited on the wall of a new Japanese restaurant, Shalala in Mountain View since December 2010.  The installation is now extended for one more month until February, and all works are available for purchase. Their gyoza and ramen are strongly recommended!  It’s worth paying a visit!

The year of 2011 will be….

Unstoppable,

This is the last blog post for the year of 2010.  I just wanted to take this moment to reflect back on this year, before moving on to the brand-new page of a new journey – the year 2011.

It has been 7 years since I first arrived to the United States. The biggest achievement of this year was to obtain the O1 artist visa, which allows me to work as a calligrapher in this country.  I wouldn’t say that it was easy – but all the wonderful support from friends, my family, teachers, galleries, sponsors, organizations, associations and calligraphy masters made this happen, and I really thank everyone for your support.

This is just a beginning.  In order to return the favor, I will work hard to keep practicing this traditional art, and create more and more opportunities to share its beauty with the world.

“Unstoppable” —-
It’s one’s own choice to loosen or increase the speed. It’s your choice to control it or let it lose the control. And it requires…
Perseverance: Keep moving forward until you achieve it.
Inner reserves: Enjoy the process & progress.

I embrace every encounters, friendships and family love – I am so grateful to have you cross my life’s path.  Hope to keep inspire each other and make “ideas” come into shapes together.

Thank you all…

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Group show featuring East Bay artist “The Bridge is Over”, presented by Spoke Art, just opened last Saturday at Lopo Gallery, San Francisco.  I had one piece exhibited in this show.

“Who You Are Defines What You Do”

I made this piece early this year, and kept in my studio since, but have never shown it at any galleries. Decided to show this time…

Larger view: My piece was placed next to Eddie Colla‘s work…

Lopo Gallery has three rooms connected, and you enter from the entrance of Space Gallery on Polk Street.

Go visit Spoke Art blog for a slideshow of photos from the night of the opening reception, taken by Shaun Roberts.

I’m going to be in a group show “THE BRIDGE IS OVER” this Saturday November 27, 2010, at Lopo Gallery SF.  I will exhibit one of my new calligraphy works (new series), which was supposed to be my personal collection.

“Spoke Art is proud to present our next group offering: “The Bridge is Over”. A reference to the classic Boogie Down Productions track made in the turmoils of the Bronx/Queens hip-hop beef, The Bridge is Over has been re-contextualized to signify the disparate gap that exists between the culture and topography of the greater Bay Area. Spoke Art has enlisted our favorite artists who live and work in the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, etc.) and brought them together to show San Francisco the quality of work, and strength of the scene, that exists just over the Bay Bridge.”

Come and join us to view a selection of amazing photography, sculpture, street art and painting all being created in the Greater East Bay, the show opens Saturday, November 27th.
Due to the gallery’s liquor license, the opening night party is 21+ (free to the public)
An all ages preview will be made available before the bar opens from 6-8PM, complimentary food and beverage will be served.

Artists include:
Attaboy, Brett Amory, John Felix Arnold III, Kate August, Nicholas Lea Bruno, John Casey, Monica Canilao, Eddie Colla, Dave Correia, Meagan Donegan, Emory Douglas, GATS, Carolynn Haydu, Hunter de la Ghetto, Peter Gronquist, Scott Hove, Jeremiah Jenkins, Keba Konte, Justin Lovato, Amanda Lopez, Becca Jay, Daryll Peirce, Deth P Sun, Ras Terms, Gina Tuzzi, Annie Vought, Derek Weisberg, Aoi Yamaguchi, Zoltron

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 27th 2010
show runs until Saturday, December 18th
Lopo Gallery
– 1141 Polk Street (entrance through Space Gallery)
San Francisco, CA 94109
